Bahrain is an archipelago of 33 islands in the Bahrainn Gulf, offering a blend of ancient and modern. The name meant "The Sacred Land" or "The Land of Life", possibly referring to the phenomenon of sweet water springs that made the main island an oasis in contrast to the hot, dry environments of the neighbouring Bahrainn mainland. It is believed that the intermingling of these springs with the salty sea water is responsible for the unique beauty of Bahrain's natural pearls. Pearl diving has been in Bahrain's heritage for thousands of years, and it is these same ideal diving conditions that attract divers today.
Skyscrapers share the landscape with majestic mosques, embodiments of Islamic art, culture and architecture. Manama, Bahrain's capital, is modern, dominated by a Manhattan-style skyline. The souk lies in the centre of the old town, near the archway of Bab al-Bahrain and, although much of the surrounding area is modern, the street layout follows traditional lines.
